The compressor targets exactly this — it reduces the DPI and quality of embedded images and scanned page backgrounds while leaving native PDF vector text, fonts, and drawn shapes completely unaffected. No Server Upload — Your Documents Are Processed Locally

When you upload a PDF to a cloud compressor, your document travels across the internet to a server you do not control, sits in a temporary storage location, gets processed, then travels back. Will compressing my PDF make the text blurry or unreadable? expand_more
No. Vector-based text (the kind produced by word processors, design software, and most modern PDF generators) is completely unaffected by image-level compression because it is stored as mathematical outlines rather than raster pixels. Only raster image content embedded inside the PDF (photographs, scanned backgrounds, screenshot elements) is downsampled. If your document is entirely text-based, compression may have a minimal effect on file size but will cause zero visual quality loss.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server when I use this tool? expand_more
No. The PDF compressor runs entirely inside your browser using JavaScript and the pdf-lib library. Your file is read from your local disk into browser memory, processed locally, and the output file is offered as a download from that same local memory. No data is transmitted to any external server at any point.
How much can I reduce a PDF's file size? expand_more
It depends heavily on the content. PDFs that are mostly images or scanned pages typically compress by 70%–90%. PDFs that are primarily vector text and line graphics may only reduce by 10%–30% even at aggressive settings, because there is little raster image data to downsample. Text-only PDFs with no embedded images may see minimal compression gains.
Can I compress a password-protected PDF? expand_more
No. Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed by the tool because the encryption prevents the library from reading and modifying the internal content. You would need to remove the password first. After compression, you can re-apply password protection using our Protect PDF tool.
Does PDF compression affect embedded fonts? expand_more
No. Embedded fonts are structural components of the PDF's text layer and are not affected by image-level compression. Font clarity and the ability to copy-paste text from the compressed PDF remain unchanged.
Will compression affect digital signatures or certifications on my PDF? expand_more
Potentially yes — modifying the internal structure of a digitally signed PDF can invalidate the cryptographic signature, because digital signatures certify the exact byte-level content of a document. If your PDF contains a legally binding digital signature, do not compress it, as the signature may show as invalid in PDF viewers after modification. For unsigned documents, compression has no impact on legal validity.
What is the difference between this tool and Adobe Acrobat's PDF compression? expand_more
Adobe Acrobat (both desktop and online versions) uses proprietary optimization algorithms and has access to your file via their infrastructure when using the online version. This tool uses the open-source pdf-lib library running in your browser. Adobe Acrobat typically achieves slightly better compression ratios due to more advanced optimization passes. However, the difference is often minor for scanned documents, and the key trade-off is that Adobe's online tools require uploading your file to Adobe's servers, which this tool does not.

The current tool processes one PDF at a time. For batch compression workflows, compress each file individually. The process is fast enough that individual files typically complete in under five seconds.
