Tax planning begins with reliable records and the applicable rules, not a list of products promising automatic savings. This checklist helps organize a salary-based estimate without assuming that every deduction or exemption applies.
Gather records first
Collect salary statements, employer tax documents, investment records, rent evidence where relevant and information about other income. Check whether a figure is monthly, annual, gross or already after deductions. Avoid counting the same contribution twice.
Verify eligibility and the regime
A payment is not automatically deductible merely because it is described as insurance, rent, pension or an investment. Confirm the applicable regime, financial year, limits and documentation with current primary sources. Eligibility and the amount of a possible deduction are different questions.
Consider cash flow and risk
Compare lock-in, fees, liquidity and risk as well as any tax treatment. Buying a product only to reach an assumed deduction target can leave you with a poor fit for your needs. This site does not recommend an investment product or provide personalized financial advice.
Use models within their limits
The HRA Calculator illustrates a rent/salary formula, and the PF Calculator projects contributions using assumptions. Neither verifies eligibility or current notified rules. Our Income Tax Calculator is explicitly historical and should not be used to compute a current return.
Reconcile before filing
Check your estimate against current official tools and records. Include omitted income, withholding and payments already made. Resolve differences before relying on a total. A comparison is only as current as the year and rules behind it.
Find current information
Use the Income Tax Department portal for current filing information, and consult a qualified adviser for your circumstances.
